The Grammy Award-winning chanteuse Mya and rapper Trina couldn’t have picked a better time to drop their joint collabo, “Earthquake”. In the urban/pop “Earthquake”, Mya adopts a talk-singy approach as she confidently warns: “Watch me do it with no hands, cuff your man ’cause here I go!”. It’s a simple enough song that’s not trying to do much, except have you “shake it like an earthquake”.
Mya is a hugely successful r&b/pop star in Japan yet has failed to maintain her relevance in the States; or anywhere else for that matter. With her forthcoming album K.I.S.S. (Keep It Sexy & Simple) set to be revamped for a stateside release, it will be interesting to see where Mya falls in the latest crop of pop singers saturating the market. Is there still a place for Mya in Pop’s new class consisting of Rihanna, Katy Perry and Gaga? Listen to the cut below to decide if Mya has what it takes to deliver her long overdue comeback!
Simply put Mya has been out far too long and is far too talented to be releasing silly songs like this. If she wants to have at least have a fighting chance in cracking the US she’s going to have to come harder vocally, lyrically and sonically—“Earthquake” just isn’t it. Trina’s verse by the way was “typical Trina”—nothing more, nothing less.
