Flashback to 2002 to relive the iconic pop culture moment when pop’s Christina Aguilera, r&b’s Mya, rock’s P!nk and rap’s Lil’ Kim joined forces to recreate LaBelle‘s 1974 No. 1 hit “Lady Maramalade” for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Similar to it’s predecessor, which was led by Patti LaBelle‘s earsplitting soprano, the 21st century version packs the same formula but with a sinfully wicked edge. The song is about a prostitute’s enticing encounter with one of her “Johns” and his lasting thirst for more as “…memories creep”.
It’s crazy what can change in a decade. Nine years ago the pop scene looked a whole lot different. To put it into perspective, all four of the ladies who lent their voices to the saucy remake were at the peak of their careers [commercially]. Aguilera was the #2 pop star in the world behind Britney, and possessed a voice that reminded many of an early Whitney. Mya’s tiny soprano was a radio staple and the songstress was just beginning to earn respect as a solid performer and dancer. P!nk came into her own as a badass pop/rock vocalist with street cred. As for Lil’ Kim was the hottest female rapper out at the time, period. Put simply, these bitches were bad.
Watch the three vocalist and uninhibited MC blow the Grammy’s away with a HOT performance of “Lady Marmalade” after the jump! As always, Ms. Patti shuts it down at the end wearning an appropriately colored rouge ballgown and a set of pipes that could [still] easily outsing your “fav”.
Something to Ponder: If instead of 2002, what if the “Lady Marmalade” cover was done in 2011 featuring Pop’s hottest… The line-up would probably look something like this:
Christina Aguilera = Nicole Scherzinger
Mya = Rihanna
P!nk = Lady Gaga
Lil’ Kim = Nicki Minaj
Agree? Who would your line-up consist of?
