This year in music, we’ve seen some shocking ish go down. Fights, arrests, unexpected deaths and extravagant pregnancy announcements have definetely topped our lists. Musically, this year was nothing to write home about, but behind the scenes and more is what delivered quite a shock to these blogging shores. I unveil my top five.

5. Teairra Mari gets arrested…
Ever since Teairra Mari was cruelly dropped by her mentor Jay-Z and stripped from her Princess of the Roc title, she has struggled to maintain a successful recording career. While former label mate Rihanna‘s career went from strength to strength, Teairra faded into oblivion. She’s had to settle with being a World Star Hip Hop act and releasing multiple mixtapes to generate buzz for herself. I guess one way to put yourself in the headlines is to get arrested in Beverly Hills for drunk driving. A shock, considering that Mari is now making strides with her career after signing a new record deal with Rico Love’s Division 1 record label. Silly girl.

4. Chris Brown goes batsh*t crazy on GMA…
Chris Brown smashed a window at Good Morning America because he was pissed at Robin Antins for consistently asking him about the incident where he battered Rihanna. All he wanted to do was forget the past and promote his new album ‘F.A.M.E.’ and he felt that Antins was playing him. After smashing the window, he stormed out of the building with no top on. Then he went on twitter and ranted about Charlie Sheen being allowed to have a career despite beating his women in the past. Of course he has a right to be angry but reacting the way he did only fed into the media’s flawed perception of him – that he’s nothing more than a thug with a very short fuse. We can also add photos of his pencil d*ck making the online rounds as well, since we’re talking about shocking moments of the year.

3. Rihanna and Ciara’s twitter beef
It was very entertaining when Rihanna and Ciara exchanged a war of words over twitter at the top of the year. But the one thing that shocked me was Rihanna using twitter to look down on Ciara’s dramatic career decline. Sure, us bloggers can get quite snarky when an artist hits rock bottom. But for an artist to laugh at another artist because they are struggling to headline their own tour or sell tickets was a real low blow. Just like her former label mate Teairra Mari, Rihanna was very close to being dropped when her debut album failed to push units. Without a super dedicated management team who succeeded in turning things around for her, Ms Fenty would definitely be singing a very different tune today.

2. Beyonce’s very public pregnancy announcement at the VMAs…
Beyonce‘s entire life is a media blitz. The media is obsessed with her, and she can’t step out of her house without a pap shoving a camera in her face. There was no other way to announce her pregnancy but by her very own publicity machine. It was a spectacular pregnancy announcement if ever I’ve seen one. In fact, we probably won’t ever see another pregnancy announcement quite like this one in our lifetime. Beyonce’s baby revelation at the VMAs was so massive, it produced Twitter’s highest ever tweet per second rate. 8868 tweets per second, and surpassing previous twitter records set by the announcement of Michael Jackson‘s death and Osama Bin Laden‘s slaying. We can also add the fake pregnancy accusations when her stomach appeared to have collapsed on national TV and the singer finally SACKING her father for allegedly stealing from her!

1. The death of Amy Winehouse
The death of Amy Winehouse at just 27-years-old, not only shocked the world. It was a tragic waste of a musical talent. Looking back at earlier posts this year, I was rooting for Amy to get her act together. I was excited about her third studio album and I wanted her to have the best comeback ever. But then in June, she encountered a disastrous experience in Serbia. The troubled singer was captured on camera behaving erratically at a gig in Belgrade and was even booed off stage by fans. A month later, she was found dead.
