Billboard Editor addresses backlash on new rules…

Billboard’s Editorial Director, Bill Werde got his butt rightly dragged all over the internet after the Billboard chart policy changes were announced earlier today. After receiving backlash from R&B fans (myself included), Werde took to Billboard’s official Tumblr site to address the uproar.

He addresses Brandy‘s sudden decline on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart (a chart based on just radio airplay is not reflective of a fan’s real input, he says). He addresses Rihanna‘s sudden rise to #1 on the R&B chart (I pity the R&B fans he says, giving little explanation). Finally, he addresses the more laughable scenario of Psy scoring the #1 song on the Rap chart (they have their guidelines for determining whether a song qualifies for a certain category).

Werde’s responses are light-hearted and witty but I still felt he danced around some of the main issues, despite making some decent points. But whatever way he puts it, still doesn’t change the fact that these changes are a blinding mess.

You cannot blame billboard. They have to change with the times. They are so many different mediums fans use to listen to their artist . you cannot expect them to ignore it. its like telling a company not to look to Nielsen tv rating before they buy spots on tv to advertise their product.
how else are they to measure how popular a song is?. lots of people don’t listen to radio, but they stream songs . all these streams are track so the record company/artist/songwriters can get paid. its no different from every time the radio plays a song the label artist and songwriters get paid. Remember when they never use to count itunes , but now they do.
the problem is RNB artist don’t get enough money for promotion. RNB artist need to use social media. learn from rihanna.

well i think recording company’s need to give equal amount of money on their r&b artist because good albums and good music will go to waste. If brandy had the same endorsements and promotion as lets say rihanna and was able to perform on tv shows like x factor and the voice. She will have no problem getting her music heard. now URBAN radio does not play rihanna songs unless they are considered urban records. Its a sad situation for urban r&b artist because theyre music wont chart on that chart as easily since its based on downloads and the majority of their fans who are minorities only serve as a small portion of the population!

A fucking mess… I’m glad he addressed the Brandy situation, but him referring to her as one of the most lovely people he’s ever met, won’t do shit for chart positions. This could end up hurting/ helping a lot of artists. It just sucks that the artists being hurt the most will probably be those artist most authentic to the R&B genre.

JUST BECAUSE AN ARTIST IS BLACK THAT DOESN’T MAKE THEIR MUSIC R&B!
How many times must this point be brought up? It’s like calling Adele’s music pop IT ISN’T ! Also Mainstream radio needs to start playing different types of music again there was once a time when mainstream radio played the best of all formats you could hear Rock, Pop, R&B, Hip Hop all in one hour now all they play is dance pop and you might get SOME other genres. It’s just a really shitty time to be an artist that isn’t putting out dance music.
