Fantasia‘s new album ‘Side Effects of You’ debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 with sales in excess of 91K copies sold during its first week.
This is her third top ten entry since winning American Idol nine years ago. It is also the SECOND highest selling album from an R&B female singer after Alicia Keys ‘Girl On Fire’ in December 2012. That one entered the Billboard 200 at #1 with 159K copies sold. Not bad considering that lead single, ‘Lose to Win’ failed to debut on the Billboard Hot 100!
So, Justin Timberlake didn’t sell a million copies in his first week, but he came dangerously close! His new album ‘The 20/20 Experience’ will debut at #1 on the Billboard 200. The set, preceded by hit singles ‘Suit & Tie’ with Jay-Z, and ‘Mirrors’, has sold 968,000 copies, according to SoundScan. Such a feat makes ’20/20′ the sixth highest debut since 2005 and the biggest for a male artist since Lil’ Wayne’s ‘Tha Carter IV’ in 2011 (964,000 units). Congrats! Having topped the iTunes chart on both sides of the Atlantic, Justin Timberlake’s Jay-Z-assisted new single ‘Suit & Tie’ makes its debut on the Billboard Hot 100. The track enters the tally at #84 and marks Timberlake’s first chart entry as a lead artist in more than five years.
The track is doing so well, it is expected to shoot into the top 10 rank next week and Billboard is even hinting that JT could very well knock Bruno Mars off the top spot. I am pleased at the huge success of the song and that R&B is back to the forefront, but now I have to ask the following question. Why couldn’t my girl Nelly Furtado receive this type of support?
