The good news? Janelle Monáe tributed the legendary Jimi Hendrix on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ last night. The bad news? Janelle did not sing any of her own/new music. The performance was to celebrate the release of Jimi’s latest posthumous album ‘People, Hell & Angels’. While we continue to wait patiently for Janelle’s new album, the CoverGirl delivered an absolutely beautiful rendition of the late legend’s ‘Little Wing’. The track is lifted from Jimi’s 1967 album release ‘Axis: Bold as Love’, and she received some assistance from the show’s housing band The Roots. Guitarist Kellindo Parker shredded his instrument with an absolutely smoking solo. But it was Janelle’s emotional vocals that stood out so much that even the hardest of people could be reduced to tears.
Even though Janelle remixes ‘Suit & Tie’ every damn day with that same tux, know this: when she plays the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in two weeks time, fans won’t be disappointed. She is always guaranteed to deliver performances as breathtaking as these.
