New Music: Willow Smith – ‘Sugar & Spice’…

So, we’re going to pretend that Willow Smith really isn’t a one hit wonder and that her parents finally came to reason and decided she should grow up first before pursuing a proper music career. Wise decision I’d say. So now that there are no immediate plans for her to drop her Roc Nation debut, she’s taken to releasing new music though her Soundcloud account. ‘Sugar & Spice’ sees the 12-year-old making requests for her soul to be “injected with darkness” and uses a sample from Radiohead‘s ‘Codex’ off their 2011 LP ‘The King of Limbs’. She addresses her fears, pre-teen angst and rebels against the world.

This of course, is coming from a girl who has yet to enter her teens, but had to face mass criticism for her eccentric fashion choices and colourful ever-changing hairstyles. Clearly, she’s making a statement. The dark and haunting ballad is backed by a gloomy piano melody and it’s a lot more mature than what we’re use to hearing from her. Compare this to ‘Whip My Hair’ and it’s like both tracks are from completely different artists! Give it a listen after the jump!

Video Premiere: Willow Smith – ‘I Am Me’…

I cannot believe Willow Smith is only 11-years-old. There really was nothing creative about me at that age. All I wanted to do was watch ‘Where’s Wally’ as soon as I came home from school, play dress-up with my dolls and be mischievous with my mama’s make-up. The only thing I worried about on most days was my mother trying to force me to eat my greens but it’s those little things an 11-year-old should have to worry about. Not feeling the need to respond to critics through their music or trying to live up to high standards set by their famous parents. But then again, Willow isn’t just your average 11-year-old, and clearly, self-expression means a lot to her.

Introspection is cool, but nepotism can be a bitch sometimes. Honestly, what could possibly be going through the mind of a rich-ass 11-year-old from a talented, wealthy family? Look no further than this music video.

Willow Smith promotes ‘Fireball’ by donning Nicki Minaj wig…

Seems like somebody is trying to give their latest single some momentum. A whole lot of it too. Never mind that the state of her parents marriage has been in the news again for all the wrong reasons. Willow Smith decided to draw some attention to herself this weekend by pinching her collaborator Nicki Minaj‘s wig. It looks like the one Minaj wore while accompanying Willow on her ‘Fireball’ video set a few months ago. Willow was heading home after some retail therapy at the Louis Vuitton boutique in Beverly Hills, California.

Watch: Willow Smith premieres ‘Fireball’ video, unveils album title…

Willow Smith visited BET’s 106 & Park just moments ago where she premiered the music video for her Nicki Minaj-assisted new single ‘Fireball’. The duo set their surroundings ablaze in the Hype Williams-directed visual. The bubbly 10-year-old also exclusively revealed her album title, which is ‘Knees & Elbows’. The reasoning:

“Everybody falls down and scratches their knees and elbows, but eventually they get back up”.

Interesting. ‘Knees & Elbows’ will drop in stores on April 3rd courtesy of Roc Nation. Peep the visual below.

Willow Smith announces release date for debut album…

Willow Smith has just announced that her debut album will drop in stores on April 3rd, 2012.

Pretty random considering that the only hit she’s had to date is ‘Whip My Hair’. She should be whipping through those textbooks instead of basking in the glow of nepotism fame. As bubbly as she is, Willow has all the time in the world to forge a successful pop career in the years ahead. I’d hate to think she crashes and burns before making any type of impact. She needs to be a child, and nothing more.

Watch: Willow Smith performs ‘Fireball’ on X Factor USA…

Willow Smith literally set the X Factor USA stage on fire with her debut performance of new single ‘Fireball’.

The 10-year-old enlisted Nicki Minaj for the edgy number, but Willow graced the stage last night without the colourful rapper and was accompanied by a group of back-up dancers. The track is preceded by previous smash ‘Whip My Hair’ and the less successful ’21st Century Girl’. For some one in their pre-teens, Willow has more stage presence than some of the artists who have been in the game for years. It was fun, it was diva and it was fierce. After the performance, judge LA Reid tweeted that she “has the #xfactor”. We’re inclined to agree!

Willow is preparing to release her debut album next year on Roc Nation. See what the charasmatic singer served up with her performance after the jump.

Willow Smith was snapped on set yesterday with rapper Nicki Minaj (November 5th). The colourful duo were shooting the music video for ‘Fireball’, the third single from Willow’s upcoming debut album. During the shoot in Los Angeles, Minaj put her colourful wig obsession to further use by rocking a hot pink one and a dress made out of stuffed animals. Willow’s mother Jada, father Will and brother Jaden were also on the set watching the action.

Willow will perform the track on ‘X Factor USA’ on November 10th. There’s no word on whether Minaj will accompany the sassy 10-year-old for the first time televised performance. More official photos and video footage from the shoot below…

Listen to Willow Smith’s “Fireball” featuring Nicki Minaj…

Photobucket

Willow Smith is back with Nicki Minaj to release a follow up to “Whip My Hair” entitled, “Fireball”. The song lacks the novelty and catchiness of “Whip My Hair”, sounding like a second rate rehash. “Fireball”, loud and obnoxious, simply isn’t that good. It was actually very awkward to hear Minaj rapping on a ten year old’s annoyingly repetitive track. When Willow shouts, “Can we get the party started?” you can’t help but scratch your head. Hon, you’re ten years old…what party we going to?!

Surly Minaj could have found better ways to utilize her time or politely declined the offer to be featured. Willow, just like her acting older brother, is far too grown for her own good. Can somebody please just let this child go to school and be a kid?

Listen to the track and sound off below!
